The Woolly Bugger
How can one improve on perfection? Try tying the Bugger in black, purple, blood, red, olive, brown, combos of colors, weighted or unweighted- it doesn't matter. This is the truly universal, 8-in-1 pattern. It's like a Christmas tree: decorate it the way you want- a little flash, maybe a bead head or rib color of your choice... if you even use a rib. Sizes 4-12, 1X-4X hooks.

When the hatch is on in late spring/early summer our lakes turn on. This is a go-to pattern. Fish it on a floating or type I sink. Hold on tight!
Great pattern during spring and fall trout spawning activity- in both moving and stillwater
An essential, all-around dry fly that imitates mayflies and midges impeccably. Tie them minute for midge and mayfly adults in the Black Hills and Bighorn River (sizes 16-22). Tie them larger for midge hatches on our prairie stillwaters (sizes 10-14)

The premier stickleback minnow pattern. A classic.
More terrestrial candy for Black Hills trout streams. Tie these in sizes 8-16... especially in size 8 on a 3X hook. Carpenter Ants are very large and emerge during very warm stretches of weather in the Hills. Great for dry fly fishing in Spearfish Canyon. Works well for general ant imitations when tied in smaller sizes like 12-16.
Fantastic pattern for prairie stillwaters when the warm breezes of late autumn blow. Millions of tiny red ants are put to flight by these winds and our lakes become covered in them. Fish cruise around slurping these down. They're "drowned" selves (just beneath the surface) will account for all that rising in the absence of a hatch when those breezes die down in evening. Tie them small... sizes 16-18. Fish on floating line. Don't worry if they sink just below the surface.
Terrestrial candy in the streams of the Black Hills; murder on prairie panfish. Tie this pattern in an array of colors, color combinations and materials like closed-cell foam.
