MOHAIR LEECH
MUST HAVE PATTERN !!!!!!!
A.K.A. The American Express Pattern... don't leave home without it! Mohair is particularly effective in leech imitations because of its slender look in water and the way it imitates the undulating motion of a swimming leech. If you can get find it (Dan Bailey's has it), we prefer it in the spectrumized look of the Canadian Series from our friend Mike Adreasan out of Bountiful, UT. The multiple colors are more effective than standard- especially in blood, brown, purple and pond olive.
IF and I mean IF you have or can find the Canadian Series in Canadian Blood, guard it with you life!! Mohair leeches tied with that stuff are responsible for many a trout both in North Dakota and the Parkland of Manitoba!
Keeep the body thin on 3X Long Streamer hooks size 6-14, A red, orange, or chartruse bead can be very effective at times as well.
BEAVER LEECH
BlOOD WORM
MIDNIGHT FIRE
This is a very effective bugger variation that utilizes a series of New Age Chenille that is very appealing. Fished on Sinking Lines (type I - III) and hand twisted, the pattern has accounted for scores of Bruiser Trout.
Look for the material in different color combinations for electrifying results.
Good choices are Copper, Gold, and Black; for the Loftis "CBGB", (see DAKOTA COUNTRY magazine, March 2007)
as well as the MIdnight Fire (shown);
Tie them on hooks 6-10 3X-4X Long
Legendary for simplicity and effectiveness, tail can be tied of a variety of dark to black materials; with hackle or without; add a bead head or not. Just make sure body is tied of beaver with guard hairs still in. Pick 'em out; tie this to your tippet; add water; hold on. Sizes 6-12, 1X-4X hooks.
The prairie waters of the Upper Great Plains are brimming with these denizens. There are times when fish are honed in on them. In windy conditions, the BW can be trolled or worked back along the current crossing the thermocline to preying fish. Also, tied in the proper size, great red midge patters in western tailwater fisheries. Sizes 8-20, standard, bent and/or scud-style nymph hooks.
